Every year, thousands of graduates step out of college with one degree and a hundred questions. “What next?” is the hardest question to answer — especially when your degree doesn’t point to just one path.
Studied commerce, economics or business? Even a general degree works. Financial services is one of the most flexible career directions you can take.. But “finance” itself is a broad word. The real question isn’t should I go into financial services — it’s which role in financial services is right for me?
Why Financial Services Is a Smart Career Turn
Financial services touch every business, every household, and every investment decision made in India today. Markets are growing. More people are investing and planning their money seriously. So the demand for trained finance professionals keeps rising. Unlike careers that need years of specialization before you can start earning, financial services offer multiple entry points — right after graduation.
But here’s the catch. Most graduates don’t know the roles that exist in financial services. So they either pick the first job offer or freeze from confusion.
The Four Career Paths Worth Knowing
1. Relationship Manager (RM)
If you’re someone who enjoys talking to people, building trust, and understanding what clients need, RM is a strong fit. RMs act as the bridge between a financial institution and its clients. They understand financial goals and offer the right products. These include Mutual Fund, SIF, PMS, Bonds, NCDs, etc.
2. Equity Advisor
For those who are analytical and enjoy following markets, stocks, and company performance, this role is about guiding clients on where and how to invest in equities. The research is provided by the broking house, so your focus stays on applying that research to guide investors in the right direction.
3. Portfolio Manager
This role goes a step further — managing a client’s entire investment portfolio, balancing risk and return, and making strategic decisions across asset classes. This role demands higher qualification and sharper skillset — so if you start as a Relationship Manager or Equity Advisor, you can steadily grow into this position.
4. Stock Broker / (Mutual Fund Distributor / Insurance Advisor)
If you think like an entrepreneur and want to build something of your own, this path is for you. As a Mutual Fund Distributor or Insurance Advisor, you can run your own business with a small team under you.
As a Stock Broker, you can go a step further — build a proper entrepreneurial career in the financial industry, grow your own setup, hire Relationship Managers and Equity Advisors under you, and run your own operation professionally.
